A Libyan plane was shot down by pro-government forces in Chad trying to repluse a new offensive by Libya, a spokesman for the forces loyal to former Chadian President Goukouni Oueddei said. The spokesman said the plane was downed in northwestern Chad during heavy fighting between Goukouni’s forces and Libyan troops. There was no information on the fate of the plane’s crew. Libya launched what was described as a major offensive Thursday, using napalm and toxic gases, against Goukouni’s forces, which are now aligned with the French-backed Chadian government they had earlier been fighting.
