Long Beach Seeks Soviet Sister City
LONG BEACH — The City Council is seeking a sister city in the Soviet Union.
The City Council last week endorsed a bid by a group of residents who will travel to Moscow later this month seeking a sister city for Long Beach.
Hundreds of American cities have adopted sister cities in foreign countries under a federally funded program. But only half a dozen of those relationships have involved ties to Soviet cities, Long Beach officials said.
Richard Madeira, co-chairman of the Long Beach-Soviet Sister City Project, told council members Tuesday that the group’s effort was “really a significant way to work on the arms race.”
Madeira said he plans to visit Moscow later this month and participate in a New Year’s Eve candlelight peace vigil in Red Square.
Long Beach currently has four sister cities: Valparaiso, Chile; Yokkaichi, Japan; Pohang, South Korea, and Qingdao, People’s Republic of China.
