BRIEFLY : Raiders Sign McKinney as Hayes’ Replacement
- Share via
Safety Odis McKinney, formerly of Reseda High and Valley College, was signed by the Los Angeles Raiders on Thursday as a replacement for cornerback Lester Hayes, who was put on injured reserve with a broken left foot.
It is McKinney’s third stint with the Raiders. He joined the Raiders in 1980, playing mostly in a reserve role until being released four days before the end of the 1985 exhibition season. He was picked up by the Kansas City Chiefs before the start of the regular season and released after five games. A week later, the Raiders signed him as a free agent for the remainder of the season.
McKinney, 28, was an All-Big Eight Conference selection as a junior and senior at Colorado.
To make room for McKinney, the Raiders put defensive end Mike Wise on the injured list, where he joined Hayes. Hayes will not be eligible for activation for a minimum of four weeks, by which time the Raiders would either be in an American Football Conference semifinal playoff game--or through for the season.
