A Compton gang member convicted of shooting a Pacoima man to death in 1985 was sentenced Friday to 13 years in prison.
San Fernando Superior Court Judge Howard J. Schwab sentenced Frederick Staves, 23, to the maximum term of 11 years for voluntary manslaughter and added two more years for the use of a gun.
Staves was charged with murder in the shooting death of Rudolph Burkes after a quarrel that broke out during a July 4 car show at Hansen Dam Park. After deliberating three weeks, a jury convicted Staves in July of the lesser crime of voluntary manslaughter.
