South County : Utility May Hit Record Level of New Customers

Population growth in southern Orange County and northern San Diego County is combining to send San Diego Gas & Electric Co. to a record number of new customers during 1986.
According to figures released by SDG&E;, 37,952 new hookups have been made in the electrical system during the first 10 months of this year. SDG&E; serves 931,000 customers.
The highest growth rates were recorded this year in north San Diego County and Orange County areas, which recorded increases of more than 8%.
SDG&E; said about 4,400 new southern Orange County customers, 7,200 new inland San Diego County customers and 8,000 new San Diego County north coastal customers, along with lesser increases in other parts of San Diego County, add up to a 5.1% increase in hookups. By year’s end, the utility company expects the new hookups to reach 45,000.
In 1985, SDG&E; added 40,313 new customers, breaking an eight-year record for customer hookups in a year.
