2 Groups Contact Garvey About Buying the Padres

Steve Garvey of the San Diego Padres said two groups interested in buying the team have asked for his help in setting up a possible purchase.
Team owner Joan Kroc announced this month that the franchise is for sale. The selling price is believed to be about $50 million. Her late husband, Ray Kroc, bought the team in 1974.
Garvey, the Padres’ first baseman, said that both groups have “more than adequate financial resources” to buy the Padres.
Garvey wouldn’t identify members of either group, and wouldn’t say if they are San Diego residents.
“We’re just in the elementary stages,” Garvey said. “There’s nothing concrete, but there is an interest . . . based around the idea that the club stays in San Diego . . . and that the potential for the franchise, really, is unlimited.”
Garvey said he might be interested in becoming a part owner or a front-office executive.
