League Upholds Canyon Runner Disqualification

Century League principals voted 5-1 Wednesday to uphold the disqualification of Canyon High School’s Brett Schultz in the league’s cross-country finals Saturday.
Schultz had been disqualified for allegedly impeding Roger Nava of Santa Ana during the last 50 yards of the final. Nava was declared the winner, said Jim Turner, Foothill High School principal and Century League president.
Schultz won the three-mile race at Yorba Regional Park in a time of 15:16.2 and Nava was second at 15:16.7 before the protest.
League coaches voted 5-1 Saturday to disqualify Schultz. Canyon Coach Don Pycior then filed his protest.
If Canyon had won the protest, it would have finished third in Saturday’s meet and qualified for the Southern Section preliminaries Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College.
Santa Ana will advance as the league’s third-place team.
