Lakewood : Operator of Stables Chosen

After two years of looking for a concessionaire to operate the city-owned Lakewood Stables, the City Council unanimously approved last week a tentative agreement with Sandie Mercer Stable Inc. of Long Beach.
The stables, which are on Carson Street near the San Gabriel River, were bought by the city seven years ago and have been run by the Parks and Recreation Department.
The council approved in principle a 25-year ground lease with Sandie Mercer Stable, which has operated a stable in Long Beach for the past 30 years.
The stables, which will be called the Lakewood Equestrian Center, will offer public riding lessons, a petting zoo, pony rides and horse shows, according to Councilman Marc Titel, who served on the Lakewood Equestrian Center ad hoc committee with Councilwoman Jacqueline Rynerson.
Mercer has agreed to spend $721,000 on improvements during the first four years of operation, according to a staff report.
