COLUMBUS — Democratic Gov. Richard Celeste was reelected, thwarting a bid by Republican James A. Rhodes, who had sought to regain his old office for an unprecedented fifth term.
Sen. John Glenn, a Democrat, held his Senate seat for a third term, rebuffing a challenge from Republican Rep. Thomas Kindness.
Celeste, 48, had lost to Rhodes in the 1978 gubernatorial race.
With 3% of the votes counted, Celeste had 78,637 votes, or 58%, to Rhodes’ 52,972 votes, or 42%.
Celeste is a former Rhodes Scholar who headed the Peace Corps in the Carter Administration. Rhodes, 77, had won a three-way Republican primary in May.
With 13% of the vote reported in the Senate race, Glenn had 259,208 votes, or 63%, to 154,401 votes, or 37%, for Kindness.
