NEWARK — 200-million bond issue to clean up hazardous-waste sites in New Jersey, which has the nation’s longest list of toxic dumps, was approved by voters. With 69% of the state’s precincts reporting, the vote was 472,783 in favor and 277,753 against.
Rep. Peter W. Rodino Jr. (D) was returned to the House for his 20th term. He was unopposed. The 13 other members of the state’s congressional delegation were virtually unchallenged.
The bond issue, part of a five-year, $535-million plan, is to provide funds for removal of hazardous waste at 229 locations targeted for clean-up.
