INDIANAPOLIS — Republican Dan Quayle easily defeated political newcomer Jill Long to win a second term in the Senate. Quayle’s 62%-38% margin made him the first candidate to win more than 60% of the vote since popular election of senators began.
In the 8th District “McRace,” Democratic Rep. Frank McCloskey defeated Republican challenger Richard D. McIntyre, 52% to 48%. In 1984, McIntyre was certified as the winner by the Indiana secretary of state, but the Democratic-controlled House voted to seat McCloskey, prompting a brief GOP walkout.
Democrats won six other House seats. Republicans won three.
