MANILA — President Corazon Aquino today described a cease-fire offer from Communist insurgents as a step forward and said her negotiators will present the rebels with a response in two days.
In a statement issued by a spokesman, Aquino said a committee of government negotiators and military advisers has been set up to more thoroughly define the government position on the cease-fire and will outline it to the insurgents Wednesday.
On Saturday, the Democratic Front, a Communist-backed umbrella group negotiating for the rebels, offered a 100-day cease-fire starting Dec. 10 as the first step toward settling the 17-year-old insurgency.
Aquino said that during any cease-fire, “peacekeeping, public safety, police operations and law enforcement functions of the responsible agencies of government” must continue.
