Ex-Professor Exposed as Felon Is Free on Bond

LINCOLN, Neb. — A convicted burglar who fled New York and compiled an impeccable record as a University of Nebraska criminal justice professor appeared before a judge Wednesday on fugitive charges and was freed on bond.
Paul Stewart, who was wanted in New York for 11 years, was hired as an assistant professor of criminal justice by the University of Nebraska-Omaha in August, 1985. University spokesman Lou Cartier said his work was excellent.
Stewart resigned after he was arrested July 16 for allegedly breaking into the office of a Lincoln physician. A burglary charge was dropped when he was accepted into a pretrial diversion program, but it was refiled Wednesday.
