The Fiesta Bowl is willing to pay more than $2 million a team if it can get a game for the national championship, according to a published report.

Tuesday’s New York Times quoted Bruce Skinner, executive director of the Fiesta Bowl, as saying his game would pay “$2 million plus” to each team if a national championship game can be arranged.

Miami of Florida and Penn State, the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the latest AP poll, are both independents and are not bound to any conference or bowl game. Both are 7-0 with four games remaining and, barring upsets, should be undefeated when invitations to bowl games are officially issued on Nov. 22.
