Foothill 11, Santa Ana Valley 6--The Knights, who may have been looking ahead to next week’s game against Santa Ana, had to come from behind to defeat the Falcons on Northrup Field in Tustin.
The Knights (2-0, 5-2) trailed, 6-5, late in the fourth quarter but mounted a nine-play drive that started on their 25. Sophomore running back John Mountain scored on a six-yard run to avoid the upset. Mountain was the game’s leading rusher with 102 yards in 22 carries.
The Knights opened the scoring with a 25-yard field goal by Scott Ball. Foothill later scored on an intentional safety by Falcon punter Hubert Chiles, who ran out of the end zone to give the Knights a 5-0 halftime lead.
Foothill held the Falcons (0-2, 1-6) to only 2 yards passing and 61 total yards.
Santa Ana Valley’s score came when defensive back Dedric Bentley intercepted a Tom Hawks pass and returned it 58 yards for a touchdown.
“Our defense played well and I’m just glad we won tonight,” Foothill Coach Ted Mullen said.
It was the fourth time the Falcons have scored six points in a game this season.
