AUSTIN, Tex. — Police smashed through windows and doors today and arrested 16 people who barricaded themselves inside the University of Texas president’s office to protest the school’s investments in South Africa.
The group did not take hostages, but three university administrators remained in the office during the 20-minute seizure on the fourth floor of the Main Building, also known as the Texas Tower. University President William Cunningham was not at his office when the anti-apartheid protesters arrived at 7:50 a.m.
