Los Angeles Marathon officials announced Friday that more than $400,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded at the second running of the race March 1, 1987.
The first male and female finisher will receive $15,000 each, plus a new car. Second- and third-place finishers will earn $8,000 and $5,000, respectively, and also will receive merchandise prizes provided by sponsors.
As previously announced, the winners of the New York Marathon Nov. 2 can earn $75,000 each if they enter the Los Angeles Marathon before Dec. 1 and then win. Also, any male completing the Los Angeles Marathon in 2 hours 8 minutes or less, or any woman running 2:25 or less, will earn a $25,000 bonus.
Nearly 11,000 runners competed in this year’s marathon March 9. Marathon officials hope that a field of 12,000 will be on hand next year.
