A mine placed by anti-government rebels exploded on the railway line linking Mozambique with South Africa, derailing a train and damaging the track, Mozambique’s official news agency reported. It said the blast occurred 25 miles northwest of the capital, Maputo, and it blamed the rebel Mozambican National Resistance. Mozambican railway officials said repairs are under way and that the line is expected to be operational again after today. The right-wing rebels have been fighting against the socialist government since the country gained independence from Portugal in 1975.
