Far West Roundup : Navy Beaten by Air Force Again, 40-6
- Share via
Halfback Marc Munafo ran for two touchdowns, and the Air Force defense set up three scores with interceptions as the Falcons crushed Navy, 40-6, Saturday at Air Force Academy, Colo.
It was Air Force’s fifth straight victory over the Midshipmen. The Falcons are 5-1. Navy is 3-2.
Besides intercepting five passes, the Air Force defense smothered Navy tailback Chuck Smith, the nation’s leading rusher. Smith, who came into the game with a 157-yard average, managed just 40 yards in 17 carries.
The Falcons seemed oblivious to a light snowfall, 30-m.p.h. wind and a slippery field.
Wyoming 38, Utah 14--Scott Runyan passed for 305 yards and 3 touchdowns at Laramie, Wyo., as the Cowboys beat the mistake-prone Utes.
Runyan, who completed 24 of 40 attempts, moved past Tom Wilkinson and Gary Fox into second place on Wyoming’s all-time passing list with 3,491 yards. He trails Phil Davis, who has 4,123 yards.
Wyoming, 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the WAC, rolled up 550 yards. The Utes (0-4 and 0-3), averaging a league-best 411 yards total offense a game, were held to 302 yards.
New Mexico 24, Texas El Paso 22--Fullback Kevin Burgess scored 2 touchdowns and rushed for 118 yards, and the Lobos won when Texas El Paso missed a last-minute field goal in a Western Athletic Conference game at Albuquerque, N.M.
The Lobos are 1-5 overall, 1-3 in the WAC. The Miners are 2-5 and 0-3.
