Liquor Receipts Decline, So Army Will Try Lottery

HEIDELBERG, West Germany —  An anti-alcohol drive has succeeded so well that the U.S. Army in West Germany will have to run a lottery next year to make up for lost liquor revenue, U.S. military officials said Friday.

They said money raised by the lottery will be used for recreational and sports programs for American soldiers in Europe.

Rex Gribble, spokesman at the U.S. Army-Europe headquarters in Heidelberg, confirmed the lottery report in Friday’s edition of the Stars and Stripes newspaper, an unofficial daily publication for the American military in Europe.

Maj. Gen. William Gourley, commander of the U.S. Army-Europe’s 1st Personnel Command, told the paper that the lottery probably would begin in October, 1987, and aim at raising $10 million to $15 million a year.
