Top-seeded Steffi Graf of West Germany needed only 34 minutes to trounce Alycia Moulton, 6-1, 6-0, in the second round of the women’s European Indoor championships at Zurich, Switzerland.
It took Grace Kim a record 3 hours 1 minute to defeat Laura Garrone of Italy, 5-7, 7-6, 6-3.
In another match, Peru’s Laura Gildemeister upset Bulgaria’s third-seeded Manuela Maleeva, 6-0, 6-3.
Brad Gilbert struggled past Gilad Blum of Israel, 6-3, 1-6, 7-5, to reach the semifinals of a $100,000 tournament at Tel Aviv.
In other quarterfinal matches, Aaron Krickstein beat Peter Kraulson of Sweden, 6-3, 6-3; Amos Mansdorf of Israel defeated Andrew Sneider of Canada, 6-4, 6-3, and Christo Styne of South Africa ousted Michael Westphal of West Germany, 6-1, 6-3.
At Scottsdale, Ariz., rookie Jim Grabb, who upset fifth-seeded Paul Annacone Wednesday, continued to surprise by defeating Leonardo Lavalle of Mexico, 6-1, 6-3, before high winds and rain postponed the other scheduled matches in the $279,000 WCT Scottsdale Open.
