What They Said at Press Conference
Here are the remarks made at Wednesday’s press conference announcing the resignation of City Manager Sylvester Murray:
Mayor Maureen O’Connor:
Mr. Murray’s decision to resign has been made because the city manager, the members of the council and I all believe that it’s in the best interest of the city. Although the decision was a sad and difficult one for all of us, it was a mutual decision. We agreed that the differences in management style and organizational leadership are the main reasons for this resignation. I wish to commend my colleagues and Mr. Murray for handling this matter with dignity, mutual respect and a spirit of cooperation. We are all committed to a positive, smooth transition, and with this behind us, we’re all looking forward to the city going back to doing business as usual.
City Manager Sylvester Murray:
After discussion with the mayor and City Council, we have agreed with the basic decision for my resignation as city manager. I’m glad the leaving is amicable, and I believe it is in the best interest of the city and myself. Of course, I am disappointed that things did not completely work out as city manager. However, I must say thank you to the mayor and the City Council for giving me the opportunity to serve the last seven months . . . 11 months. I think it’s 13 months. I am not in my best today. San Diego is a fine city, and I’m sure it will continue to be great.
