Laguna Beach : Slide Repairs Could Take Several Weeks

City crews Monday began making preliminary repairs to a Laguna Beach roadway that caved in after a water main broke, and the city’s director of municipal services said it may take several weeks and the expenditure of about $100,000 before the 1100 block of Summit Drive is back to normal.
“The road may be open to traffic by this weekend,” Terry Brandt said, “but preparation of grading plans and permanent repairs will take much longer.”
He said there still was no answer as to why the eight-inch cast-iron pipe gave way, undermining a 20-foot section of the paved street and dropping it about 10 feet late Saturday night.
“We know it was an old line, but it’s difficult to tell why it broke at this time. There could be a thousand reasons,” Brandt said.
“Fifty or 60 homes in the (Arch Beach Heights) neighborhood were without water and other utilities for a little while, but all services have been restored now,” Brandt said.
Until Summit Drive is reopened, police said, access to the relatively isolated neighborhood is limited to two public roads and a private fire lane.
