The World : Officials Question Walesa
Polish authorities questioned Solidarity founder Lech Walesa and other prominent union figures about the banned movement’s newly created council of seven former underground leaders, which already has been branded illegal by the government. Speaking from his home in Gdansk, Walesa said his interrogator seemed to be more interested in discovering what the group’s plans were than in delivering a warning. Walesa said he told the official he was legally entitled to form the “temporary council,” of which he is not a member, under the Polish constitution and international treaties signed by Poland.
