22nd Game of Chess Match Adjourned
The 22nd game of the world championship chess match between Gary Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov was adjourned after 40 moves in Leningrad on Friday, with Kasparov a pawn ahead. He has some chance to win the game when play resumes today, but a draw appears to be the most likely result.
The 24-game match is now tied at 10 1/2-10 1/2. If the match ends in a 12-12 tie, Kasparov will remain world champion. Thus Karpov needs a win to wrest the title, while Kasparov needs only to draw the remaining games. A Kasparov victory in the adjourned game would almost certainly wrap up the match in his favor.
The final two games are scheduled for Monday and Wednesday.
