NEW YORK — A fight for the undisputed heavyweight championship will be held next March or April, Seth Abraham, senior vice president for HBO, said.
Abraham made the statement at a news conference to formally announce Trevor Berbick’s scheduled 12-round defense of the World Boxing Council title against unbeaten Mike Tyson Nov. 22 at the Las Vegas Hilton.
That bout will be the fifth of eight HBO-televised heavyweight title fights under the promotion of Don King and Butch Lewis.
The last three bouts, Abraham said will be Tim Witherspoon’s World Boxing Assn. title defense against Tony Tubbs sometime in December, a fight between the WBA and WBC champions early in 1987, then the fight for undisputed titles.
