South Roundup : North Carolina State Beats Wake Forest, 42-38

Erik Kramer tossed a 15-yard touchdown pass to Danny Peebles with 37 seconds left to lead North Carolina State to a 42-38 victory over Wake Forest Saturday at Raleigh, N.C.

“Being that wide open in the end zone is a scary feeling for your first catch of the year,” said Peebles, who had been out of action since the season opener against East Carolina.

The Atlantic Coast Conference victory overshadowed outstanding performances by Wake Forest’s Mike Elkins and James Brim.

Elkins, a sophomore quarterback, completed 35 of 58 passes for 429 yards and 3 touchdowns. Brim caught 15 passes, a Wake Forest record, for 194 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Elkins threw a five-yard strike to Chip Rives with 2:38 remaining to give the Demon Deacons a 38-35 lead, but the Wolfpack went 65 yards on the game-winning drive to raise its record to 2-0-1 in its ACC opener.

Wake Forest is 2-1 overall and 0-1 in the ACC.

Duke 22, Ohio U. 7--Quarterback Steve Slayden completed 18 of 22 passes for 213 yards and threw to Greg Flanagan for 2 touchdowns to lead Duke to victory at Durham, N.C.

After grabbing a 15-0 halftime lead, Duke (2-1) scored on its second play from scrimmage in the second half. Freshman T.J. Edwards scampered 64 yards to give the Blue Devils a 22-0 cushion early in the third quarter. The run was Edwards’ first collegiate carry.

Georgia Tech 28, Virginia 14--Cedric Stallworth led a Yellow Jacket defense that forced eight turnovers in an Atlantic Coast Conference opener at Charlottesville, N.C.

Stallworth, a sophomore defensive back making his first start, recovered two fumbles and intercepted one pass in the first half as Georgia Tech built a 21-7 lead, with 18 of those points coming after Virginia turnovers.

Georgia Tech, which played to a 17-17 tie against Division I-AA Furman last week, moved to 1-0-1. Virginia is 1-2.

Louisville 45, Western Kentucky 6--Dion Booker and Craig Swabek each ran for two touchdowns, and Jay Gruden threw for a pair of scores in his first collegiate start to power the Cardinals (-2) over the Hilltoppers (1-2) at Louisville, Ky.
