Golden West Opens at Bakersfield
Golden West College opens the 1986 season tonight at 7:30 against Bakersfield in a nonconference game in Bakersfield’s Memorial Stadium.
The Rustlers (4-5-1 last season) return seven starters on defense, including linebacker Mark Ziegenhagen. The 6-foot 2-inch, 220-pound sophomore was a second-team, All-Pacific-9 selection last season. The defensive line will be helped by the addition of freshman Herman Baine (6-0, 235) from Westminster High School.
Bakersfield (5-5 last season) lost a valuable part of its offense last spring when running back Chris Johnstone decided to sign a contract with the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League. Johnstone led the Pacific-9 in rushing in 1985 with 1,089 yards.
In the final game of the 1985 season, Golden West scored a 37-28 Pacific-9 Conference victory over Bakersfield. This year, Bakersfield will play in the Western States Conference. Golden West is now a member of the South Coast Conference.
Orange County’s other community college teams--Saddleback, Fullerton, Orange Coast and Rancho Santiago--start their seasons next Saturday.
