Thomas Hearns is considering giving up his World Boxing Council super-welterweight title to fight as a middleweight and possibly as a light heavyweight, manager-trainer Emanuel Steward said.

In Mexico City, the WBC issued a news release saying that Hearns had resigned the 154-pound class title.

“I talked to Sulaiman (WBC president Jose Sulaiman) and said Thomas was considering giving up the title,” Steward said. “But there has been nothing in writing, and it has to be in writing.”

Hearns, who once held the World Boxing Assn. welterweight title, recently said he would consider fighting as a light heavyweight since his rematch with middleweight champion Marvelous Marvin Hagler has apparently fallen through.
