Berkeley Professor Honored by Vatican

Elizabeth A. Bernays, professor of entomology at the University of California, Berkeley, has won the Vatican’s highest scientific honor--this year’s Pius XI Gold Medal of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.
Bernays, 45, who was honored for her research in ecology, has pursued a broad range of research on plant-insect interaction.
A single gold medal is given each year following the recommendations by 70 scientists who advise the Pope on scientific matters. Pope John Paul II will present the medal to Bernays at the Vatican Oct. 28.
