“Atlantic Soul Classics.” Various artists. Warner Special Products. There’s some care in the compiling here: Producers, recording dates and locations are all listed, and the brief notes are casually informative. And it’s hard to resist a disc that kicks off with Sam & Dave, Jackie Wilson, Aretha Franklin and Otis Redding, then serves up a string of Leiber & Stoller hits. “Yakety Yak” and “Shake, Rattle & Roll” are out of place but fun to hear. Drawbacks: You get some hiss with the increased clarity (listen for Al Jackson’s drumstick to graze the overhead mike on “Green Onions,” the notes advise), and at 45 minutes it’s a little short. 1/2
