SACRAMENTO — Gov. George Deukmejian’s appointment of former Republican State Chairman Tirso del Junco to the University of California Board of Regents was narrowly confirmed by the state Senate.
The vote Friday was 21 to 9, the bare majority needed for confirmation in the 40-seat upper house.
Del Junco, a physician, left Cuba when Fidel Castro came to power. He was California GOP state chairman from 1981 to 1983.
The Senate confirmed the reappointment of former U.S. Atty. Gen. William French Smith as a regent by a 37 to 0 vote.
