The Soviet Union, in an official protest, demanded that the United States, France and Britain halt demonstrations marking the 25th anniversary today of the start of construction of the Berlin Wall. Moscow called the demonstrations “hostile to the cause of peace.” The heightened tension prompted the U.S. diplomatic mission in West Berlin to issue a “higher state of alert” because of a possible attack on American companies or soldiers in West Berlin, a mission official said.
