Former Cowboy Larry Bethea Is Arrested for Assaulting Wife, Stealing From Mother

DALLAS — Former Dallas Cowboy defensive lineman Larry Bethea was in jail Tuesday night on charges of assaulting his wife and stealing his mother’s life savings of $64,000, authorities said.
Bethea, 30, a No. 1 pick of the Cowboys in 1978 out of Michigan State, had been staying with his mother in Newport News, police said. Bethea’s wife, Gloria, 31, told police he was following her in a taxicab Monday evening and forced his way into her car while she was stopped. She suffered a cut lip.
Police said when they arrested Bethea he was holding more than $61,000 in cash, which he was charged with taking out of an attic safe from his mother’s savings.
Bethea’s contract with the Cowboys expired after the 1983 season. He played in the United States Football League but was given his release last season from the Houston Gamblers.
