The World : Soldier Killed in Ulster

A British soldier was shot and killed near the line dividing Protestant and Roman Catholic communities in West Belfast in Northern Ireland. Police said that gunmen believed to belong to the outlawed Irish Republican Army crossed from the Catholic district and shot the man, who belonged to the Ulster Defense Regiment, in front of his home. Earlier, the wife of a former part-time soldier was wounded in the hand when a parcel bomb exploded as she opened it. A similar parcel bomb sent to a prison officer was defused.
