Starting today, a newly formed San Diego police task force will engage in “high visibility enforcement projects” aimed at curbing the spread of “crack,” or rock cocaine, trafficking in the city.
Two dozen officers, including narcotics street team detectives, special response team SWAT officers and patrolmen, will be assigned to the detail full time, according to police spokesman Bill Robinson.
Using unmarked cars and plainclothes officers, the operation will concentrate on arresting both dealers and users of crack.
“We’ve already targeted a number of locations and persons,” he said.
“The operation will continue for as long as it requires to bring the problem under control,” Robinson said.
Lt. Randy Nisheit of the Southeast division will oversee the task force.
