Talks in the eight-day Detroit strike by 7,000 workers recessed without a settlement. Charles Jamerson, mediator for the Michigan Employment Relations Commission, said that talks will resume today. Earlier, Mayor Coleman Young rejected a request that he and James Glass, president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees’ Council 25, join in the bargaining. Young said a meeting with Glass “would generate more heat than light and would not be productive.” The strike over wages has left the city with no bus or garbage service.
