Notebook / David Pack : La Canada High Names Grid Coach

La Canada High School has named Steve Gillette head football coach. The 38-year-old Gillette replaces Steve Silbert, who resigned. Gillette was offensive coordinator at Duarte High School and previously was an assistant coach at Brea Orlinda, Muir, Burroughs and San Fernando high schools.
Hoover High quarterback John Alaimo led the East All-Star team to a 14-0 victory in the San Fernando Valley All-Star Football Game. He scored the East’s first touchdown with eight minutes left. The East was coached by Fred Cuccia, who coached Alaimo last year at Hoover. Next fall Cuccia will coach South Pasadena High School and Alaimo will attend the University of Nevada, Reno.
Austin Heberger of Oakmont Country club captured the first flight in the California State Amateur Championships at Carmel Valley Golf and Country Club. Heberger narrowly defeated Ted Hersch of San Francisco in the finals of the match-play tournament.
Glendale’s Independence League all-stars will host the Little League senior softball Section 1 Championship Friday at 7 p.m. and a possible second game Saturday at 7 p.m. Both games will be played at School Canyon Little League Field. The winner will advance to the divisional tournament in Apple Valley.
