Redistricting Compromise OKd

In a victory for Mayor Tom Bradley, the Los Angeles City Council today approved a compromise redistricting plan that puts Councilmen John Ferraro and Michael Woo in the same Hollywood-Wilshire district while creating a new predominantly Latino district.
The 13-2 vote came one day after Bradley vetoed a plan drafted by Councilman Richard Alatorre that would have made Woo’s 13th District the predominantly Latino district to settle a U.S. Justice Department suit. The suit contends that existing council district lines dilute Latino voting strength in violation of the Voting Rights Act. Alatorre didn’t bother to try to override the mayor’s veto, apparently lacking the 10 votes required to do so.
