Transformed with utmost subtlety and invention or used for parodic effect, everything was grist for this Italian composer’s mill--circus music, jazz, pop, Weill, mambo, Strauss waltzes--and the results immeasurably enhanced the mood of many motion pictures. Included in this excellent 60-minute compilation are themes from “The Godfather,” “Romeo and Juliet,” “The Leopard,” and seven Fellini films. Only “War and Peace,” with its atypical non-comic bombast, is less than marvelous. CD sound: Bello .
