Rains Still Flood Pennsylvania, New York Border
PANAMA, N.Y. — Hundreds of residents along the New York-Pennsylvania border filled sandbags and drained waterlogged cellars Sunday as heavy rain continued to flood two quiet creeks that have become raging rivers.
“Our ground is so saturated, it can’t hold any more,” said J.D. Kifer, chief of the Sugar Grove, Pa., Volunteer Fire Department.
“They (forecasters) said this may go on until Wednesday,” Kifer said. “We’re right in a bad spot.”
No deaths or injuries from the flooding have been reported in either state.
Several severe thunderstorms Sunday morning eliminated much of the cleanup that had been done since Friday, when flooding forced the evacuation of several hundred people in Panama.
“Every time we get something repaired, it goes down again,” said Chautauqua County Civil Defense Director Wanda Gustafson, adding that at least a dozen area bridges had been washed out.
