The first group of Latino peer counselors for the Senior Health and Peer Counseling Center will graduate at 11 a.m. today at Memorial Park in Santa Monica. The 15 counselors, most of whom speak only Spanish, range in age from 50 to 73.
They have been trained by mental health specialist Livia Bracamonte to help their peers learn to cope with loneliness, loss, depression and other concerns of aging. Bracamonte said that Spanish-speaking people have had limited access to mental health services.
The free services will be offered at the counseling center, 2125 Arizona Ave., Santa Monica.
