El Toro : Japan Search Goes On for 3 Missing Marines
Searchers continued Friday to scour the ocean off Japan for three U.S. Marines missing since their helicopter disappeared during a night mission, according to military authorities.
The flight crew members, assigned to Camp Pendleton, were identified Friday by Sgt. Cindy Kimball at El Toro Marine Corps Air Station as Capt. James F. Sanders of Lafayette, Ind.; Capt. David J. Lueder of Kailua, Hawaii; and Cpl. Frank P. Donaghey of Bedford Hills, N.Y.
Their “Huey” helicopter was operating from the amphibious assault ship Tarawa when the aircraft apparently crashed Wednesday night 300 miles east of the island of Hokkaido, the Marine Corps said.
Although assigned to Camp Pendleton, the helicopter was operating with another unit from Tustin Marine Corps Air Station as a consolidated squadron during a western Pacific deployment, Kimball said.
