$100 Million to Aid Nicaragua’s Contras: Pro and Con
- Share via
The question to be answered is not whether Nicaragua is now a military threat to the United States justifying large-scale intervention. It is not. The question is rather whether Nicaragua could become a military power that might create instability by encouraging revolution in neighboring states?
The answer to that is yes.
The goal of stymieing the Sandinistas might well be achieved more cheaply by funding the contras . Why should we ever use “the might of the U.S. armed forces” when a less drastic option might work? The Reagan response is measured and restrained, commensurate with the present threat.
