Scotland Yard, Member of Parliament Want Drug-Test Results Made Public

WIMBLEDON, England —  An uproar over drug testing of professional tennis players competing at Wimbledon continued Wednesday, while the All England Club said the tests were actually being done in London and not on the grounds themselves.

Both Scotland Yard and a member of the British Parliament have called for results of the tests to be made public rather than kept confidential, as organizers of the men’s tour have announced.

“The Committee of Management have known since last November that the Men’s International Professional Tennis Council were going to introduce drug testing at up to two of the five major tennis events,” the All England Club said in a statement released Wednesday.

The action by the MIPTC drew protests when it was disclosed that the testing is being done to rehabilitate rather than punish offending players and that the results of the tests will be secret.

Detective Chief Superintendant Roy Penrose of Scotland Yard said Tuesday that anyone found taking drugs should be reported to the police. Anthony Beaumont-Park, a conservative member of Parliament, agreed with Scotland Yard, saying, “You cannot have Wimbledon--although they always regard themselves as superior beings--making one law for themselves and another for everybody else.”
