Ex-Mexico City Chief Awarded Book Profits
MEXICO CITY — A judge has ruled that two authors defamed former Mexico City Police Chief Arturo Durazo by accusing him of involvement in drug trafficking and prostitution, and now must give Durazo half the profits from their book.
Civil Judge Basilio Espinoza Rosales said “The Dark Side of Durazo” by Jose Gonzalez Gonzalez and Guillermo Mendizabal Lizalde harmed Durazo’s financial condition, reputation and honor, according to Durazo’s lawyer, Raul Trujillo Garneros.
Durazo will receive $170,000 in profits from the book as a result of the ruling, Trujillo said.
Durazo is presently on trial on charges of extortion and illegal possession of firearms. The charges stem from his tenure as police chief. The book accused Durazo of involvement in drug trafficking, extortion, prostitution and misuse of public funds.
