The final witness before the government rested its spying case against Jerry A. Whitworth in San Francisco federal court was former high-ranking CIA official George A. Carver Jr., who testified that the code key lists and other information the former Navy radioman is accused of passing to Russia “is priceless . . . quite literally invaluable” and could significantly “tilt the delicate balance on which our strategic survival depends.” Prosecutors presented 135 witnesses against the 46-year-old Whitworth. The defense case will begin on Monday.
