Senate Goes on Live TV; Some Put On Red Ties for Camera

WASHINGTON — The Senate went live on nationwide television today in a historic transmission that Republican leader Bob Dole said could be a “big, big plus” and Democratic leader Robert C. Byrd predicted is “here to stay.”
Byrd, meeting with reporters minutes before the first televised session began, said it was the most historic event for the Senate since 50 observers were allowed to observe the infant Congress in Philadelphia in 1795.
“TV is here to stay,” said Byrd (D-W.Va.). “There won’t be any turning back.” About nine senators were on the floor as the first televised Senate opening took place, about half wearing red ties--the recommended color for the camera.
