San Diego
A 41-year-old San Diego man who had been scuba diving near the Coronado Islands apparently drowned Saturday afternoon, authorities said.
The victim, Donald Robert Matheny, was declared dead at Chula Vista Community Hospital at 6 p.m., said a spokesman for the San Diego County coroner’s office. A Coast Guard helicopter, responding to an emergency call from the vessel First Kiss, flew Matheny to the hospital.
Max Murphy, a coroner’s deputy, said drowning was the suspected cause of death but the precise cause will be determined after additional tests.
