Frederick (Fritz) Pollard, an All-American halfback at Brown and the only black head coach of a National Football League team, died May 11 in Silver Spring, Md., it was disclosed Saturday. He was 92.
Pollard, who was born in Chicago, began his professional career with the Akron Pros of the American Professional Football Assn., which became the NFL in 1922.
A contemporary of Chicago Bears founder George Halas, Pollard served as head coach of the Hammond Pros of Indiana for three seasons beginning in 1923.
Pollard is survived by three daughters and a son, Fritz Jr., who won a bronze medal in the 110-meter high hurdles in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin.
